A New Years Food post
A Happy and delicious 2009 to you all!
As you can see, the normally quiet streets of Auckland City is filled with cars(and lots of people)… a sight reserved for New Years eve and the Santa parade during early December. Although the New Years celebration in New Zealand is usually on a smaller scale compared to other cities around the world…
…but they still managed to pull off some fireworks!
Unfortunately for food lovers, a lot of restaurants close on New Years eve and/or during the Christmas-New year period, usually resuming business around January 5th-12th. I don’t know if this is the case around the world, and I fully understand for any business to take a break - but it does make life of a foodie around this time slightly more difficult. Notwithstanding closed restaurants, most good eateries are fully booked during these times, especially those centrally located; which makes planning ahead essential if you want to treat yourself or other people to specific restaurants!
That aside, a few Chinese Restaurants offer New Year-specific menus (e.g. Dragon Boat on Elliot Street), and they are usually not as fully booked as other venues (although this is the reverse during the Chinese New Year period) so there’s that.
My New Years celebration was wrapped up in my friend’s apartment, where we spent some time chatting and generally enjoying some quality time over a glass of red wine. Hope you all had an enjoyable New Year celebration like I did!
